2021 Board of Directors Nominations

Our Annual Meeting was held at 4pm CST on Tuesday, May 4  via ZOOM to protect you, our TEAM members, and volunteers. Three positions for the Board of Directors and one position on the Supervisory Committee are available for election this year. The Board appointed the Corporate Governance Committee to act as the Nominating Committee. The committee met on January 7, 2021. The committee nominated Tom Fanning, Barry Mixon, and Shelia Penn to serve a 3-year term on the Board of Directors and Julie Smith was nominated to serve a 3-year term on the Supervisory Committee. Information on each nominee is stated below.

Mr. Fanning graduated from Millsaps College in 1958 with his B.S. degree and went on to obtain his Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1963. Tom worked in the mental health industry for 34 years, and served as the Director of Personnel at Bryce Hospital for 20 years before he retired in 1996. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Alabama Mental Health Credit Union (AMHCU) from 1991-2009 and remained on the Board of Directors through 2011 after AMHCU merged with Alabama ONE Credit Union in 2009. Mr. Fanning currently volunteers with various organizations throughout the Tuscaloosa community, including Meals on Wheels, Friends of Library Bookstore, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Tuscaloosa Public Library.

Mr. Mixon attended Florence State University where he obtained a B.S. degree in Business Administration in 1970. He worked for Buccaneer Homes for 12 years and for Cavalier Homes Inc. for 27 years, where he served as the Executive Vice President for the manufactured housing company from 2008 to 2011. At Cavalier Homes Inc., Barry was responsible for marketing products, management of office processes, and managing a team of over 1,000 employees. Mr. Mixon retired from Cavalier Homes Inc. in 2011 and currently resides in Tuscaloosa.

Shelia Penn recently retired in October 2018 as the Facility Director of Bryce Hospital. Ms. Penn began her career as a nurse in the Department of Mental Health, serving in various positions at Bryce Hospital, Harper Geriatric Psychiatry Center, and Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility. Ms. Penn serves the community in various organizations and is currently the Chapter President of the Central Alabama Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

Supervisory Committee Nominations

Mrs. Smith obtained her B.S. degree in Accounting from Auburn University in 1991. Julie has 22 years of experience in the financial sector of the medical field, working at various companies across the southeast. Most recently, she worked at Surgical Care Affiliates, serving as the director of financial operations and then the director of financial planning & analysis. Mrs. Smith is currently serving as the administrator for University Orthopedic Clinic in Tuscaloosa.


All four nominees are currently serving as volunteers and are members of Alabama ONE.

Nominations may also be made by petition signed by 500 members of the credit union per nominee. There shall be no petitions by proxy, nor may members sign blank petitions (candidates name omitted). All signatures are subject to proper validation by procedures approved by the secretary of the credit union. Each nominee by petition shall submit the following:

  • A brief statement of qualifications and biographical data in a form approved by the Board of Directors with the petition. A petition form can be requested by emailing ComplianceDept@alabamaone.org or by contacting our Director of Compliance at 205.342.0130.
  • Nominations by petition must be accompanied by a signed certificate from the nominee stating that he or she is agreeable to nomination and will serve if elected to office.

The deadline for filing nominations by petition with the secretary of the credit union shall be 30 days from the date the nominations made by the nominating committee are provided to the members. Nominations may be filed at the Main Office:

The secretary of the credit union shall ensure that nominations by petition, along with those of the nominating committee, are posted in a conspicuous public place in each credit union office at least 35 days before the annual meeting. Elections will not be conducted by ballot, and there will be no nominations from the floor when there is at least one nominee for each position to be filled. In the event there is a need for voting, it will be completed by mail ballot.
